Metropolitan University

Sylhet, Bangladesh

"Quality Tertiary Education at an Affordable Cost"

Genesis & History

The commencement of the World Trade Organization (WTO) regime, alongside rapid advancements in ICT and the global Internet explosion, created a paradigm shift for developing nations. Recognizing the need for a skilled workforce, the Government of Bangladesh enacted the Private University Act (PUA) 1992 (later replaced by PUA 2010).

In the early 2000s, Sylhet faced a critical shortage of higher education opportunities. With only one public university available, many aspiring students were forced to migrate to Dhaka or overseas, incurring immense costs. Against this backdrop, Dr. Toufique Rahman Chowdhury—a visionary banker and economist—founded Metropolitan University. The institution officially launched on 3 May 2003 with just 17 students, and has since evolved into a premier seat of learning.

The Founder's Vision

Dr. Toufique Rahman Chowdhury

Founder & Chairman (Emeritus)

A PhD holder in Development Economics from the USA and a graduate of the University of Dhaka, Dr. Chowdhury brings decades of high-level banking experience to education. As an author of seminal works on political economy and governance, his leadership provides the university with a unique blend of academic rigor and entrepreneurial spirit.

“The sight of young minds striving for knowledge is far more rewarding than having trillions in a bank account. Complete student care is our religion.”
